My American Ninja Warrior Season 11 Experience

– written by Jason Meland

Have you ever had a dream SO BIG that it literally gave you goose bumps when thinking of it?

I have…

For the last 6 years I’ve been dreaming of competing on the hit TV show American Ninja Warrior.

As many of you may know, I almost had a shot last year. I waited 28-days in the walk-on line in Miami, got picked to run as walk-on #13, then right before I had my chance, rain shut down production and crushed my dreams.

This year ANW production set up a lottery system for the walk-on line…

And just to clarify, there are 2 ways to get on the show: The ideal way is to get a “call-back” from production after sending in your submission video. The second way (if you don’t get the “CALL”) is to try to “walk-on”.

This year for Season 11, ANW decided to help people who could not dedicate weeks to waiting in a walk-on line by doing a random lottery drawing.

So, here’s how it went down…

103 Ninja’s from around the United States gathered in Atlanta, wrote our names on a raffle ticket and put it in a bucket.

Production called out the names of 20 people.

I was chosen as #11! (crazy thing is Amanda actually predicted I’d be picked at number 11… super weird!)

Yet, even though I was a chosen number… there was no guarantee I would get to run the course.

The filming started around 9:30pm (it’s an overnight filming in case you didn’t know) …

They called walk-on numbers 1-5 to start of the competition, then proceeded into running 88 call-backs to run the course.

I was up all night long, anxiously awaiting my shot… around 430am they called walk-ons 6-10 to start warming up. Right when I thought my dreams may be crushed 2 years in a row… a producer called my name.

I finally got to run the course at 5am! I was literally the LAST competitor.

Here is the lesson I want to leave you with.

If you have a dream… a goal… something you want to accomplish. Don’t let fear get in your way. Go after your dreams. You may encounter failure, disappointment, and have your soul-crushed. But that’s what makes champions.

I almost didn’t make the trip to Atlanta because I feared rejection. But I decided last minute to buy the plane tickets. I figured NOT GOING was a sure way of not getting picked.

I put my fear to the side and took the chance. I truly believed I would get picked. I actually visualized this everyday for an entire year! (another topic for another time)… it paid off for me.

It can for you too… if you’ve failed on a fitness goal (or any goal for that matter) and truly dream of accomplishing it. Never give up.

Reaching greatness isn’t always easy. But the journey to achieving your dreams is what makes you into a stronger, wiser, and more successful person.

On the other side of failure is success.

So, get out there and do great things. Make healthy choices. Make moves towards your goals. And never give up.

Have an awesome day!
